Dear adam,
Thank you for your enquiry.
Unfortunately, that is true, at this stage the Data Replicator 3 is mainly designed to backup on LAN.
However, you can still use DR3 to backup using remote from the other end. However the speed will depend on you external network setting and speed. I will say it will be much slower than Local backup, and maybe have chance of disconnection (it is a possibilities, we haven't tested).
What we did is to log into router and do port forwarding.
http://portforward.com/english/routers/You will need to forward port 445 for DR3 to able to work, after port forwarding, please go to the link below to see if the port is opened.
http://www.yougetsignal.com/tools/open-ports/Then open data replicator select the backup destination, go to second option to type in your DS location (will have to be external IP which can be obtained from
http://www.yougetsignal.com/tools/open-ports/ if you are not sure where to look for this information).
The destination will look something like //[external ip]/[folder on DS to put backup file].
Then just choose file to backup and start the tasks.
We have test using 1G file to backup from external network PC to Internal DS (remote) the speed is quite slow, we got 20kb/s (but this is because the network is taking up by all company members, so really depends on your network setting and speed).
And this method had been try out by us but not officially supported or tested. So it up to user to take the risk to use this method.
Hope this helps
